Becoming unstuck from VMware

A step-by-step approach to modernise your infrastructure for the future

It's a tough time to be a VMware customer.

Broadcom's 2024 acquisition has created a world of pain. A pure profit focus means price hikes of 100%+ for most customers, slashed product options, multi-year lock-in contracts, bare minimum support and stalled innovation.

If you're like many businesses, your systems have become a 'spaghetti mess' of virtual services, mission-critical applications and interdependencies that leave you feeling stuck. More price rises are looming, major vendors like Dell are ending agreements and there’s no clear escape route.

If you're in VMware procrastination mode, you're not alone.

Waiting isn't a strategy.

Doing nothing or simply outsourcing the challenge to your MSP is too risky. The decisions you make now will impact your business for years to come. This pivotal moment is an opportunity to reassess your entire IT infrastructure, focusing on risk minimisation, cost optimisation and modernisation for future growth.

"VMware has a huge amount of vendor lock-in – super glue-style lock-in."

Migration and Modernisation Pathways

Migration is not one-size-fits-all. Whether you need to migrate, optimise or modernise your workloads, AWS offers services to help you meet your goals and move your workloads at your own pace.

Relocate your workloads to Amazon Elastic VMware Service

Amazon Elastic VMware Service (Amazon EVS) is the fastest path to migrate and operate VMware workloads on AWS. Get the scale, resilience and performance of AWS together with familiar VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) software and tools. Choose from self-managed or managed options to meet your business needs for control and customisation of your VMware architecture. Embrace AWS native and managed services for analytics, storage, databases, serverless compute, generative AI and more to drive business agility, innovation and transformation.

Rapidly lift-and-shift your workloads to Amazon EC2

Rapidly rehost your VMware Virtual Machines (VMs) to Amazon EC2. Reduce infrastructure costs, scale efficiently and tap into the performance and resiliency of AWS with minimal changes to your applications. With purpose-built migration services such as Amazon Q Developer or AWS Application Migration Service, you can automate undifferentiated migration tasks and expedite your cloud journey with minimal business disruption.

Transform your workloads on AWS with modernisation services

AWS offers multiple pathways to optimise, modernise and transform your workloads. Move from self-managed container platforms to managed services such as Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), ensuring reliable deployments that adapt seamlessly to business demands.

You can also replatform to managed services such as Amazon RDS for databases, Amazon FSx for file storage and Amazon Workspaces for desktop infrastructure, allowing you to focus on strategic IT and business initiatives. If you want to transform your applications to the cloud and take full advantage of cloud-native features, you can refactor applications to serverless with AWS Lambda.

Expand your migration strategy with AWS Partner offerings

Consider AWS Partner offerings such as Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) or Nutanix Cloud Clusters on AWS (NC2 on AWS) for VMware-based workloads, both available on AWS Marketplace. ROSA helps you have a fully-managed application platform on AWS infrastructure based on Red Hat solutions while NC2 on AWS enables you to run a self-managed hypervisor on top of Amazon EC2 infrastructure.

Cevo helps Iconic Australian Business Jim's Group modernise its infrastructure

Jim’s Group currently serves over 500,000 customers annually, via web and phone enquiries, which are then allocated to the relevant franchisee in their area.

For over twenty years, all business operations and data storage ran on an internal server, often leading to process and reliability issues and regular downtime. This was costly and often delivered a poor customer experience, resulting in lost revenue for the franchisees.

Having grown rapidly, the organisation realised it could not continue scaling with its current technology. To compete globally and develop smarter, more innovative solutions that would result in greater profitability for franchisees, Jim’s Group began its migration to the cloud using Amazon Web Services (AWS).

A key priority was ensuring that the migration was built to last, so they connected with a trusted AWS partner Cevo who worked closely with the existing internal team to help transfer knowledge throughout the transformation and co-develop tools, processes and practices.

The complete modernisation journey took just six months from initial contact to completion, without customer interruption. This created a newly empowered team even more motivated by the new business potential. Overall, it freed up time, delivered a more predictable and consistent cost model and enabled more transparent accountability.

Ultimately, any improvements to the business makes life better and more profitable for franchisees, which in turn helps Jim’s Group attract more franchisees and provide better, more reliable customer service to a rapidly growing market.

Mantalus helps Scalzo Foods migrate data centres to the AWS cloud

Scalzo Foods needed to migrate their data centre environments to the cloud at short notice due to changes in their data centre vendor's business model and unsustainable VMware licence costs. Maintaining business operations while making this transition created significant pressure and risk.

By employing AWS Application Migration Service (MGN), Mantalus swiftly migrated Scalzo's data centre directly to the AWS cloud, replicating the existing structure without complex and costly overhauls.

The migration was executed at a significantly lower project cost than traditional approaches. Scalzo Foods seamlessly transitioned its entire data centre footprint to AWS without disrupting operations. They're now positioned to scale efficiently and better manage future growth while decoupling from financially unsustainable hypervisor licensing.
